The power chord for ancient MacBooks that magnetically clung to the charging port to keep it from flying off the desk if someone tripped over it? Last year, Apple reintroduced the ingenious connector on its high-end MacBook Pro models, but it is now available on the MacBook Air, the company's most cheap notebook.
In July, the new MacBook Air 2022 and MacBook Pro 2022 will be available for purchase. The Air is $1,199, while the new Pro is $1,299. The older M1-powered MacBook Pro has been retired, while the 2020 M1 MacBook Air is still available for $999. Here's all you need to know about the couple.
Air Beats Pro
Surprisingly, the new (and less expensive) MacBook Air is the more luxurious of the two new laptops. For example, it adopts some of the design improvements made to the more expensive MacBook Pro models in 2021, such as thinner screen borders and a notch for the webcam, resulting in a slightly larger 13.6-inch display than the new MacBook Pro's 13.3-inch display.
Despite having a bigger screen, the Air is lighter than its predecessor. When fully closed, it weighs 2.7 pounds and is only 0.44 inches thick, restoring the "air" in MacBook Air as one of Apple's lightest laptops yet. The Pro, by comparison, weighs 3 pounds and is 0.61 inches thick.
This also implies that the new MacBook Air can take advantage of an updated 1080p webcam for smoother video calls, whilst the new MacBook Pro is limited to a 720p camera. The Air also boasts quad-speaker configuration for greater audio than the MacBook Pro's stereo speakers, while Apple claims the Pro's microphones are studio grade, whereas the Air's are not.
Both have the same LCD IPS 2K-resolution screen, although the MacBook Air can get a little brighter than the MacBook Pro, matching its screen brightness of 500 nits. In terms of screens, the MacBook Pro is still the only Mac in Apple's portfolio that has the Touch Bar display above the Magic Keyboard, a feature that has never really taken off. Although both the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro have Touch ID built in, the MacBook Air includes physical function keys. (No, a Mac still doesn't have Face ID.)

The new MacBook Air features a MagSafe connector, which allows the power cable to magnetically adhere to the laptop and safely separate if the wire is accidentally tripped over, preventing your notebook from dying prematurely. Even though the new MacBook Pro costs more, this feature is not available. Fast charging is also possible with the Air if you purchase the (non-included) 67-watt USB-C power adapter, but it isn't available with the new Pro. The Air, according to Apple, can be recharged up to 57 percent in just 30 minutes.

Both computers are powered by Apple's new M2 processor, which Apple claims has an 18% faster CPU, a 35% more powerful GPU, and a 40% quicker Neural Engine than the M1. When we get our hands on these gadgets, we'll have to wait and see how much better it is in real-world tests. The MacBook Air, on the other hand, is fanless, so the MacBook Pro's fan will be able to squeeze a little more power out of the CPU during heavy workloads. For the MacBook Air, you can choose between an 8-core or 10-core GPU, but the latter is the only option for the MacBook Pro.
The MacBook Air, Apple claims, will last "all day," with about 18 hours of video playing, while the MacBook Pro claims 20 hours. Both come with audio connectors and two USB-C Thunderbolt connections, as well as 256 gigabytes of storage that can be upgraded to 2 terabytes at checkout.
The new MacBook Air 2022 is available in silver, space grey, a blue-ish "Midnight," and a champagne-tinged "Starlight," and it starts at $1,199, a $200 increase over its predecessor—though Apple will continue to sell the M1-powered MacBook Air for $999. On Amazon, it's often available for considerably less. The MacBook Pro, which starts at $1,299, is mostly a processor update. In July, both of these will be available.
