FEATURED POST

WhatsApp is apparently working on a new feature to let users edit messages after sending them

It is impossible to change a WhatsApp message after it has been sent, but WhatsApp is working on a solution with a new edit tool. You'll be able to modify messages after they've been delivered, allowing you to rectify everything from funny typos to incorrect facts.

According to a fresh rumour from WABetaInfo, the edit message capability may be coming to beta versions of the app soon. The functionality will also bring WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook, up to speed with Telegram, which currently allows users to edit messages after they've been delivered.

According to various sources, WhatsApp began developing the functionality five years ago but abandoned it afterwards. The edit message button on the instant messaging platform is now working again.

If a WhatsApp user sends a message that contains an error, they currently have only two choices for correcting it. They can either send a right message and ask users to ignore the incorrect one, or they can erase the incorrect message and send a new one. In any case, a new message must be sent.

When a message is long pressed, it appears that the feature will appear as a dedicated button in the top bar, with the options to copy text and forward the message.

Will you be able to detect whether or not communications have been altered?
When any social site allows you to edit what you've sent/posted, one of the most common concerns is the lack of awareness. Will people be able to determine if a message has been altered and is not the same as the original? The answer appears to be a resounding 'no' in the case of WhatsApp.

"Probably there won't be an edit history to examine past versions of modified messages," according to the WAbetaInfo report, "but since this feature is under development, their plans may change before launching the feature."

Details about the time-window users will have to amend a message that has already been delivered are "unknown at the present," according to the report. The edit button will first appear in the iOS and Desktop test releases, according to the article. However, we expect it to appear on Android beta builds as well in the future. In any case, we're unlikely to see the feature in stable versions for a long time.
