At the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, Yamaha debuted the E01 and E02 electric scooter ideas as the first concrete steps toward electric and clean energy solutions. The company had been hesitant to embrace electric scooter development, partnering with existing e-scooter manufacturer Gogoro.
Since the E01 and E02 were unveiled in 2019, there has been almost little information about Yamaha's progress in developing them. This has sparked rumours that the project has struck a snag or has been abandoned. However, Yamaha's R&D unit was working hard to turn the concept into a commercial product. The goal was to maintain Yamaha's position as a market leader in the two-wheeler segment.

The E01 electric scooter is a 125cc class scooter with specifications that meet the regulatory criteria for its class in Europe and Asia. It will most likely have a power output of 11 kW (15 hp) or less and will be capable of reaching high speeds of 90km/h.

The Yamaha E02 e-scooter will be smaller than the E01 and will be in the 50cc class. It has two seats and a single-sided swingarm at the back. The Yamaha E02 could have interchangeable batteries to increase its range. Smaller battery packs have a lesser capacity and are lighter.
Yamaha's previous collaborations with Gogoro may imply that Gogoro's batteries will be used in the models. There is no firm date set for the launch of the two Yamaha e-scooters in 2022.
